Overview

## What radiator installation & replacement involves

Radiator installation covers fitting new radiators, replacing failed or corroded ones, and moving existing radiators to a different wall or room, such as during a renovation or extension. It's a common job on its own, but it's also frequently needed alongside a boiler upgrade, an extension, or after a powerflush reveals a radiator that's too far gone to save.

This work suits homeowners renovating a room and repositioning furniture around a radiator in an awkward spot, anyone with a radiator that's leaking, corroded or cold at the top despite bleeding, and households extending their heating system into a new room or loft conversion. It's also relevant when upgrading to a bigger radiator because the current one simply can't heat the room adequately, a common issue in older Central Scotland housing stock with single-glazed extensions or larger-than-average rooms.

Signs a radiator needs replacing rather than just bleeding or repairing include cold spots that don't clear after bleeding (usually sludge or corrosion inside), rust-coloured water when bled, visible leaking around the valve or from the radiator body itself, or a radiator that's simply undersized for the room it's in.

The reason this needs a qualified engineer rather than a DIY swap is the wider system. Removing or fitting a radiator means draining part or all of the heating system, and getting the pipework, valves and bleed points wrong can introduce air locks, leaks at the joints, or an imbalance that leaves other radiators in the house running cold. It's also an opportunity to check the radiator's correctly sized for the room, rather than just matching what was there before.

After any radiator work, the whole system needs re-balancing. This means adjusting the flow through each radiator in the house so heat reaches the far end of the system as effectively as the near end, which is often skipped in quick, cheap radiator swaps and is the main reason some rooms stay cold even after a replacement.

### New, moved or replaced

We handle straightforward like-for-like swaps, room repositioning during renovations, and new radiators added for extensions.

### Correctly sized to the room

We check the radiator's output matches the room's heat demand, rather than assuming the old one was the right size to begin with.

### System balanced afterwards

Every radiator job includes rebalancing the system so heat reaches every room evenly, not just the one we've worked on.

### Minimal mess and disruption

Draining and refilling is done carefully, with dust sheets and care taken around flooring and furniture.

What happens if you leave it

## The cost of putting it off

Radiator problems left unaddressed, or a cheap swap done without balancing the system afterwards, tend to cause knock-on issues across the whole house.

### Uneven heating across the house

A radiator swap done without rebalancing the system often leaves other rooms running colder than before, even though the immediate radiator's fixed.

### Leaks causing water damage

A radiator leaking at the valve or body can damage flooring, skirting and ceilings below if left unaddressed.

### Undersized replacements

Fitting a like-for-like radiator without checking room size and heat loss can leave a room permanently under-heated, especially after an extension or added glazing.

Our process

## How the job runs, start to finish

The same sequence every time, so you always know what happens next and what it costs before it happens.

1. Step 1

    ### Free quote and room assessment

We discuss which radiators need work, whether it's replacement, repositioning or new installation, and give a free quote.

2. Step 2

    ### Sizing and positioning check

For new or replacement radiators, we confirm the correct output for the room and the best position for even heat distribution.

3. Step 3

    ### System drain and fitting

The relevant section of the system is drained, old radiators removed if applicable, and new pipework and radiators fitted.

4. Step 4

    ### Refill and system balancing

The system is refilled, bled, and every radiator in the house is balanced so heat reaches evenly from room to room.

5. Step 5

    ### Testing and sign-off

We confirm each radiator heats fully and evenly before we leave, and we stand behind our workmanship on everything we've fitted.

Why it's worth doing

## What you actually get out of it

### Fast turnaround

Most single or multi-radiator jobs are completed within a day, with same-day availability where possible.

### Safe, correct pipework

Gas Safe registered work means pipework and valves are fitted correctly, avoiding leaks and air locks.

### Longer-lasting system

Correct sizing and fitting reduce strain on the boiler and pump caused by an imbalanced or badly matched system.

### Lower heating bills

A properly sized, balanced system heats rooms efficiently instead of running the boiler harder to compensate for cold spots.

### Even heat throughout the house

Rebalancing after every job means no room is left colder as a result of work done elsewhere.

### Peace of mind

Knowing the whole system's been checked and balanced, not just the one radiator that prompted the call.

In detail

## Radiator Installation & Replacement: the technical side

### Panel, column and towel radiators compared

Panel radiators are the standard choice for most rooms, available in single, double and double-convector configurations offering different heat outputs for the same wall space. Column radiators, with their vertical tube design, suit period properties or feature walls where appearance matters as much as output, and can be more effective per unit of wall space than a standard panel in some configurations.

Heated towel radiators are typically fitted in bathrooms and combine heating with drying, either plumbed into the central heating system, run on electric elements, or dual-fuel for both. Choosing the right type isn't just aesthetic; it affects the radiator's heat output (BTU rating) and therefore whether it can adequately heat the room it's going into.

### TRVs and system balancing explained

A thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) lets you set an individual temperature for that specific radiator, useful for rooms that need to run cooler or warmer than the rest of the house, such as bedrooms versus living rooms. TRVs work alongside, not instead of, the main system balancing.

Balancing means adjusting the lockshield valve on each radiator so that water flows through the whole heating circuit at the correct rate, ensuring radiators furthest from the boiler heat up at a similar rate to those nearest it. Without balancing, radiators nearest the boiler often overheat quickly while those at the far end of the system stay lukewarm, regardless of how new or correctly sized the radiators themselves are.

### Sizing radiators correctly for the room

Radiator output is measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units) or watts, and the correct size depends on room dimensions, window size and glazing, insulation levels, and ceiling height, not simply matching whatever radiator was already there. This matters particularly in extensions, loft conversions, and older properties with solid walls or larger-than-average rooms, where an undersized radiator will never bring the room up to a comfortable temperature no matter how long the heating runs.

We calculate heat loss for the room before recommending a radiator size, so you're not left with a replacement that looks right but performs the same as the inadequate one it replaced.

FAQs

## Questions we get asked

How much does radiator replacement cost?

Cost depends on the number of radiators, sizing and whether pipework needs moving. We give a free, no-obligation quote after discussing what's needed.

Can you move a radiator to a different wall?

Yes, this is a common request during renovations. It involves extending or rerouting pipework, which we quote for after seeing the room.

Why is my radiator cold at the top but hot at the bottom?

This is usually trapped air, fixed by bleeding, but if it recurs it can indicate sludge build-up inside, which may need a powerflush or replacement.

How long does a radiator installation take?

A single radiator swap typically takes half a day; multiple radiators or repositioning work can take a full day.

Will you balance the whole system, or just the radiator you fit?

We balance the whole system after any radiator work, so other rooms aren't left running colder as a result.

How do I know what size radiator I need?

We calculate the room's heat loss based on size, glazing and insulation before recommending an output, rather than assuming a like-for-like swap is correct.

What standard is the installation carried out to?

All radiator work is carried out by a Gas Safe registered engineer to current regulations, and we stand behind our workmanship.

Can you fit radiators as part of an extension or loft conversion?

Yes, we regularly extend heating systems into new rooms and size the new radiators to suit.

Do you offer same-day service for a leaking radiator?

Where possible, yes. Call and we'll do our best to prioritise a leaking radiator the same day to limit water damage.

Which areas do you cover?

Cumbernauld, Glasgow, Falkirk, Bonnybridge, Denny, Kirkintilloch, Lenzie, Bishopbriggs and wider Central Scotland.
