Overview

## What hot water cylinders involves

A hot water cylinder stores heated water for use across the home, either fed by gravity from a loft tank (a vented cylinder) or fed directly from the mains at full pressure (an unvented cylinder). Most modern installations use unvented cylinders because they deliver strong, consistent pressure to every tap and shower in the house without needing a loft tank at all.

This work suits homes with a system or regular (heat-only) boiler, rather than combi boilers which heat water on demand without a cylinder. It's relevant if you're building an extension with more bathrooms than your current cylinder can support, replacing an ageing cylinder that's started leaking or corroding, or upgrading from a vented system to unvented for better pressure throughout the house.

Cylinders typically need replacing after 10 to 15 years, sometimes sooner if the water in your area is hard or the cylinder wasn't installed with the correct expansion vessel and controls. Signs it's time include rusty water, a cylinder that's audibly banging or knocking, weak or inconsistent hot water pressure, or visible water pooling around the base.

Unvented cylinders in particular need to be installed and worked on by a G3 qualified engineer. G3 is the specific qualification covering unvented hot water systems, because these cylinders store water at mains pressure and require correctly fitted safety devices (expansion vessel, pressure relief valve, temperature relief valve) to operate safely. An incorrectly installed unvented cylinder is a genuine safety risk, not just a performance issue.

Sizing matters as much as the qualification behind the install. A cylinder that's too small for your household runs out of hot water mid-shower; one that's oversized wastes energy keeping water hot that you don't use. We size the cylinder to your household's actual usage, not just a like-for-like swap of whatever was there before.

### G3 qualified installation

Unvented cylinders require G3 qualification by law. All our unvented cylinder work is carried out to this standard.

### Correct sizing for your household

We size the new cylinder to your actual hot water demand, not just a like-for-like swap of the old one.

### Vented and unvented both covered

Whether you're keeping a loft-fed vented system or upgrading to unvented for better pressure, we handle both.

### Safety devices fitted correctly

Expansion vessels, pressure and temperature relief valves are fitted and tested to the required standard on every unvented install.

What happens if you leave it

## The cost of putting it off

A hot water cylinder that's ignored past its usable life, or installed incorrectly, causes problems that range from inconvenient to genuinely dangerous.

### Water damage from leaks

A corroding cylinder can leak slowly for weeks before it's noticed, causing damage to flooring, ceilings below and stored belongings.

### Safety risk on unvented systems

Unvented cylinders without correctly fitted safety devices can be dangerous, since they store water at mains pressure and temperature.

### Escalating replacement cost

Ignoring early warning signs like knocking or weak pressure often means a full emergency replacement later, at higher cost and with no hot water in the meantime.

Our process

## How the job runs, start to finish

The same sequence every time, so you always know what happens next and what it costs before it happens.

1. Step 1

    ### Free quote and household assessment

We ask about your current system, number of bathrooms and household size to recommend the right cylinder type and size.

2. Step 2

    ### Site survey

We check your existing pipework, boiler compatibility and available space before confirming the quote.

3. Step 3

    ### Removal and installation

The old cylinder is safely drained and removed, and the new one is installed with correctly fitted safety devices where unvented.

4. Step 4

    ### Testing and commissioning

The system is filled, tested for pressure and leaks, and safety devices are checked and commissioned to standard.

5. Step 5

    ### Handover

We confirm the system's working properly at every outlet before we leave, and we stand behind our workmanship on everything we've fitted.

Why it's worth doing

## What you actually get out of it

### Same-day turnaround available

Where the cylinder's failed unexpectedly, we prioritise getting hot water back into your home as quickly as possible.

### Fully compliant safety

G3 qualified installation means unvented safety devices are fitted and tested correctly, not left to chance.

### Longer cylinder lifespan

Correct sizing and installation reduce the wear that causes early corrosion and failure.

### Lower energy waste

A properly sized cylinder avoids paying to heat more water than your household actually uses.

### Strong, consistent pressure

Unvented systems deliver full mains pressure to every tap and shower, without a loft tank in the way.

### Peace of mind

Knowing the safety devices behind your hot water supply have been fitted and tested by a qualified engineer.

In detail

## Hot Water Cylinders: the technical side

### Vented vs unvented cylinders

Vented cylinders rely on a cold water tank in the loft to feed the system by gravity. They're simpler and cheaper to install but deliver weaker pressure, especially in showers, and the loft tank takes up storage space and can be a source of contamination or freezing in cold weather.

Unvented cylinders connect directly to the mains, delivering full pressure to every outlet without needing a loft tank at all. They require G3 qualified installation because the stored water is at mains pressure, meaning correctly fitted safety devices (expansion vessel, pressure and temperature relief valves) are essential, not optional. For most households upgrading their hot water system today, unvented is the preferred choice for pressure and convenience.

### Sizing a cylinder correctly

Cylinder capacity is measured in litres, and the right size depends on the number of bathrooms, household occupants and usage patterns, not just a straight swap of the old unit's capacity. A typical family home with two bathrooms often needs somewhere between 180 and 250 litres, but this varies with simultaneous usage, such as running a shower while a bath fills.

Undersizing leads to running out of hot water at peak times, particularly mornings with multiple people showering. Oversizing wastes gas keeping unused water hot around the clock. We work through your household's actual routine before recommending a size, rather than defaulting to a like-for-like replacement.

### Safety devices on unvented systems

Unvented cylinders require a combination of safety devices to manage the pressure and temperature of stored water: an expansion vessel to absorb the increase in water volume as it heats, a pressure relief valve to release excess pressure, and a temperature relief valve to prevent the water overheating. These devices must be correctly sized, fitted and commissioned, which is why unvented installation is restricted to G3 qualified engineers.

Annual servicing of an unvented cylinder checks these devices are still functioning correctly, in the same way a boiler service checks the boiler. This is worth building into your regular maintenance routine rather than treating the cylinder as fit-and-forget.
